Hello, my name is Rustin. I am a young male koala, I had been spotted sitting in the same tree for several days, a concerning sign for anyone familiar with our koala behaviour. When I was brought to Port Stephens Koala Hospital, it became clear why I had been so still—I had suffered a fracture to my right arm, and upon closer examination, an older injury to my femur was also discovered. The injuries suggest that I had likely been hit by a car sometime in the past week, leaving me unable to move freely and find food.
I underwent surgery by the dedicated veterinary team to repair my broken arm, with a metal pin placed for stabilisation, along with a cast to provide me with additional support. I am now eating well and resting comfortably under the care of the wonderful team at the hospital. I am happy I will remain in their care until I am healed enough to begin the process of rehabilitation and strength-building, enabling me to climb trees again as part of my transition back into the wild. Please go to the Adopt a Koala page to support the Port Stephens Koala Hospital. I understand that the cost of my procedure and post-operation care will be in excess of $5,000.
We rely on adoptions and donations to help save koalas and other native wildlife. As we are a not-for-profit organisation, your generosity will help to cover the inevitable costs.
We have Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status which makes it easier for us to fundraise to support the ongoing work of Port Stephens Koala Hospital.
