Koala Care

Naturally a very important and rewarding role is the rescue and care for our sick and injured koalas.

As a Koala Carer, you will start as a Trainee working under the supervision of experienced Carers as well as the PSKH veterinary staff.  You will be expected to commit to a roster on a weekly or fortnightly basis as this best facilitates the retention of knowledge throughout your training.

Depending upon your availability, training can take from a few weeks to a few months so you will need to be flexible, understanding and willing to participate during the initial training period.

Koalas need regular and close care so our work is organised into 2-shifts per day, 7-days per week, 52 weeks per year.  You will, within a team of Carers, work to support each other so good communication is essential.

Koala Care is a physical role, so a relatively good level of fitness will be required to perform the tasks involved.  Morning shifts are more demanding physically than the afternoon shifts.

Some of the duties as a Carer include:

Morning shift:

  • Replenishing leaf for koala food
  • Maintenance and cleaning of yards and leaf storage areas
  • Administering medicine and treatments (where qualified to do so)
  • Completion of a daily Koala Care Record and entering the information into a database
  • Tidying and cleaning of all areas in the immediate vicinity of the yards.

Afternoon shift:

  • Check all yards to ensure the welfare of the koalas.
  • Top up water and leaf where needed
