One very important activity at PSKH is helping to maintain our plantations that provide fresh eucalyptus leaves daily for the koalas at the Hospital.
We have several local plantations growing several varieties of eucalypts. These can be small areas with less than 100 trees up to areas with thousands of trees. The Plantation Team is responsible for the support of these areas to ensure the trees continue to grow to provide healthy and edible leaves for the koalas in care.
The work is varied and can depend on each plantation but may include mulching around trees, cultivating, weeding and spraying (both herbicides and pesticides) mowing, line trimming, planting and supporting tree growth.
All these activities involve the use a variety of equipment (both mechanical and hand use) including, tractors, zero-turn lawnmower, line trimmers, cultivators, weed sprayers, chainsaws and a multitude of hand tools (saws, wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes etc).
Plantation care is carried out on Tuesday mornings, usually from 8:00am to Noon and always with a mandatory coffee break and a chat. Occasionally, we will also work on Thursdays (depending on requirements and weather).
If you feel this might be something for you, please include Plantations as an option in your Volunteer application and at your induction.
