Completing my placement at Port Stephens Koala Hospital was an incredibly valuable and rewarding experience. It was amazing to work so closely with a variety of Australian wildlife in both the sanctuary and hospital. I had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in koala husbandry and healthcare, including preparing feed, administering medications, and assisting with treatments such as laser therapy. The staff and veterinary team were incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable, giving us the opportunity to observe and assist with health assessments using ultrasound, X-ray, and CT imaging. This placement strengthened my practical skills and further inspired my passion for pursuing a career in veterinary science.

I recently completed a work placement at PSKH and couldn’t recommend them enough. I gained invaluable hands-on experience working with koalas and various other wildlife species while learning a great deal from the team, who are all very knowledgeable, informative and truly dedicated to their work. On top of that, communication with Adele Davies prior to my arrival was informative and very helpful, making the transition into this placement very easy.

The team created a very supportive environment and were generous with their time and teaching. I recently undertook a placement at Port Stephens Koala Hospital (PSKH). I would highly recommend this experience for any student interested in wildlife, conservation, animal health, or veterinary care. Throughout my placement I got the opportunity to work alongside a variety of native wildlife including koalas, kangaroos, birds, possums, and more.

The placement allowed me to apply a lot of teachings from university in a professional environment, furthering those skills and my education, whilst strengthening my interest in pursuing a career in the wildlife sector. Every day provides new challenges and opportunities for skill development and education on a variety of ideas including nutrition, health, husbandry, veterinary procedures, etc.

The team was extremely welcoming, supportive, and always happy to help further my skills and education. The staff provided opportunities for questions, explanation of procedures. The whole placement was also excellently organised with the opportunity to spend an afternoon at Irukandji shark and ray encounters expanding my education beyond just terrestrial wildlife.

Overall, the placement was an amazing opportunity, and I would highly recommend it to anyone, even those not as interested in wildlife. It is a great opportunity to apply university teachings in a real professional environment.

My placement at Port Stephens Koala Hospital gave me a much broader understanding of wildlife rehabilitation and the work that goes on behind the scenes. I was able to help with daily koala care and observe veterinary work with several native species, while learning how husbandry, behaviour, biosecurity and release planning all connect. Everyone was very welcoming and generous with their knowledge, and I left feeling more confident around wildlife and even more motivated to pursue veterinary medicine.
