Possum Name: Errol
Rescued: March 2022
Released: August 2022
Reason Errol came into care: A member of the public brought Errol to Port Stephens Koala Hospital after finding him with a broken hind leg and a major wound to the same leg where he was missing a lot of skin leaving his leg muscle exposed.
Treatment provided: Once at the Hospital, Errol was provided with pain relief and antibiotics to ensure that the wound would not get infected. He underwent surgery to repair the break, and the wound was bandaged to offer him the best possible chance of survival. For the next 6-8 weeks Errol received intensive care from the Hospital team with several repeat checks to ensure that he was healing well.
Once the break healed, focus was placed on making sure that he was able to use the leg well and he was placed into an enclosure where he built up fitness to ensure he could climb and move around as he should. Once Errol was given the all-clear, he was released back home into the wild.
