Once our patients have been treated, initially by our veterinary team, they are further rehabilitated by our experienced personnel, assisting them on the road to recovery with further treatment and care, catering for their individual needs. Once the patients recover from any illness and their treatment is finished, they begin the pre-release stage. During this stage they are monitored to ensure they have fully recovered and an experienced species rehabilitator will ensure they are displaying the natural behaviours they need to be able to survive in the wild. Upon evidence of these behaviours, the release site is carefully selected to ensure it meets the requirements for the species – once this is confirmed they are returned home to the wild.
Sadly, some koalas will never be able to return safely to the wild due to various conditions that would impact their survival. Luckily, PSKH is one of the few facilities that have several specifically designed enclosures that mimic a wild environment (without the threat of disease, predators or human impact). These koalas can live out their days in comfort and safety at the Hospital and also assist their wild counterparts through education focussed on their unique species and the threats they face in the wild.
If you would like to assist PSKH with their mission and commitment to continue saving the unique species and wildlife of Port Stephens, you can virtually adopt any of the koalas that now call PSKH home. If you cannot decide which of these koalas to adopt, you can make a donation direct to PSKH, which will go towards the vital treatment and equipment needed to care for these species and many more to come.
We rely on adoptions and donations to help save koalas and other native wildlife. As we are a not-for-profit organisation, your generosity will help to cover the inevitable costs.
We have Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status which makes it easier for us to fundraise to support the ongoing work of Port Stephens Koala Hospital.
